Going away for the weekend

Well, I'm off to the Island this week to visit my girlfriend, so don't expect any updates until monday.

Oh, and www.mindtrick.ca now does point to this page. The webpage is comming along very nicely, and may be released before the nov 1st launch date. Check back for details.

Edonkey shut down

Well, the p2p community took another blow again today, as edonkey was shut down. The 2nd p2p program shut down in as many weeks, it seems the RIAA is on the war path.

"With many P2P applications offshore or simply open sourced, the entities that will end up being most devastated by Grokster will be those -- like us -- that set up shop in the US, abided by American laws, paid taxes, and, at least in eDonkey's case, tried to license content from the entertainment industry." said MetaMachine president Sam Yagan, owner of Edonkey.

The RIAA has taken a very aggressive stance after sending letters out to several P2P sites. Yagan gave a hint as to what these letters contained today as well:

"These letters threaten imminent litigation -- not only against the companies, but also against their executives and directors -- based on the music industry's interpretation of the MGM v. Grokster ruling unless the firms immediately take steps to eliminate infringement."

Yagan closed his statement with this:

"As you know, eBay recently acquired the P2P company Skype for more than two billion dollars," Yagan said. "Note that Skype was founded offshore; it would be a real tragedy and a blow to our economy should all technology entrepreneurs take their innovations offshore."

Well, this is exactly what is going to happen. Obviously you can't fight the RIAA or MPAA in the united states because of the laws. It won't take too long for people to realise that to win this battle, they're going to have to change the location of the battle...

BitTorrent users should be thankful for the time being, as the only thing saving them right now is the open source nature of the program, and the quick and easy ability to run a tracker from anywhere...

Problems with MindTrick.ca

Well, the redirect of www.mindtrick.ca is going to take atleast another day, if not the weekend. I called webserve today, and they said they had not received my payment. So I called my bank, and they said that they did.

So I called webserve, and they still denied receiving a payment, and told me to call back tomorrow. No more then 5mins after I got off the phone, I received an email stating that the payment was received...

Anyway, I have to wait for a registration letter from the CRIA before the domain will become active. Check back here for details.

Well, knowing that www.cjb.cc cannot provide what the new "MindTrick's Realm" site needs, I've cancelled my account with them. Www.mindtrick.tk and within 24hrs www.mindtrick.ca will now both point to this blog until a new hosting service can be acquired.

For those not yet in the "know" about MindTrick's Realm closure and soon coming re-opening, Click here for a previous post on the subject.

Also the launch date for the new site has been set back to Nov. 1st/2005. More info on site updates will be posted here.

BitTorrent gets 8.75MillIon

Well yesterday it was confirmed (via betanews.com & yahoo) that the BitTorrent Project had received 8.75million dollars from Doll Capital Management. DCM's website currently does not have any ref. To the investment, nor does BitTorrent's home page.

Quoted from yahoo's article:

"BitTorrent says it will use the funds from DCM-Doll Capital Management to improve its infrastructure and make it more appealing to Hollywood."

One has to wonder exactly what steps will be taken to make BitTorrent more "Hollywood friendly", as one of the programs major applications has been sharing Movies that are either still in theatre or just coming out on DVD. I'm just hoping that Bram Cohen doesn't in some way cave into the MPAA, and add some features to the BitTorrent client that would be less then desirable. But, that shouldn't be a major worry for anyone, as the code for BitTorrent is and will remain open source.

A statement by a user on betanews however does raise an interesting topic...

Site Redesign

Well damnit, everybody else has a blog, So I decided to open my own.

My time right now is being split between the torrent scene and creation of my new Website. The old site, found previously at www.mindtrick.tk has gone too long without a proper update. Formally a TechSupport/review/tweak site, it is being totally junked. Helping people is great and all, but there are plenty of sites like that out there, and I just don't have the time to commit to keeping it up to par.

The new site is going to be geared towards file sharing, with more detail on the BitTorrent scene. As most of my time is now spent on filesharing, it just makes sense that the new site becomes geared towards that as well.

I've also registered www.mindtrick.ca for the new site as well. I'll be keeping the dot.tk address for awhile, but will be dropping it sometime in late nov/dec.

Also shopping for a new host. My current host (www.cjb.cc) is a great free hosting service with no adds, but has limited php support, and has too many file ext restrictions and a max 1meg file size limit. So far my I'm pretty sure I'm going with the BC based www.webserve.ca, but plans could change. Anyway, check back here on the blog for more details on the new site, as well as news and opinions on the file sharing community.
